ED 474 The Science and Teaching of Reading
This course examines the research of reading experts and cognitive scientists regarding how students learn to read. Heavy emphasis is placed on development in five areas: phonemic awareness, phonics, oral reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Additional instruction about language development and all textual codes (for example, visual literacy) is included and the course includes an emphasis on understanding the science of reading, dyslexia and struggling readers. The IDA Knowledge and Practice Standards are studied and candidates apply these in ED 479 and ED 489.
