HI 135 Perspectives in United States History
This introductory level course is designed around the foundational questions of the history of the United States. What are the stories we tell about the United States and the people who have lived here? Whose voices are included in the telling of its national history? What does it mean to be an American and what are the ideas and values that Americans cherish? Through an investigation of these questions, students will be introduced to how historical stories are told. Students will investigate and compare the stock stories that typically populate historical textbooks to the concealed stories that are often not told. Students will move beyond the traditional grand narrative of United States history to explore the stories of resistance and the counter-narrative stories that can be told to re-conceptualize, re-envision, and synthesize a new understanding of what it means to be an American in its modern, integrated, and diverse culture. For majors, this will be categorized under the Americas concentration.
