HI 340 The Struggle for Equality: African American History in the 20th Century

This course examines the progression of African American history starting with the migration of slaves from Africa through the election of Barack Obama in 2008. The course will emphasize African Americans’ struggle to gain equality in civil rights, political representation, and economic independence. Topics include, but are not limited to: the Middle Passage and African migrations; the failure of reconstruction; violence, gender, sexuality, and race in the post-bellum South; African American progressivism, Pan-African movements, the Civil Rights Movement, and modern race relations. US History II or Africa in a Global Context are suggested as prior courses. For majors, this will be categorized under the Americas concentration.
