TH 307 Dante
The birth of the romance languages created exciting possibilities for medieval Christians to explore their faith. The tender images of the suffering Jesus, vivid images of Mary as Queen of Heaven, the torments of hell and the purifying fires of purgatory were born in the Middle Ages. Theologians, poets and other visionaries shaped Christians assumptions about holiness, salvation, justice and mercy. This course examines the historical issues and theological questions that have shaped Christian life for the last eight hundred years. Through a careful reading of Dante's Divine Comedy, it explores the medieval sacred worldview and, ultimately, the faith of the Church.
