Experiential Learning Assessment Portfolio Guidelines and Process
As part of the Prior Learning Assessment process, the University of Saint Mary offers an Experiential Learning Assessment (ELA) program for learning not covered by the American Council on Education (ACE) guidelines. This is college-level learning that has been attained outside a credit-bearing institution which will be supported by documentation. Documentation can come from a variety of sources such as advanced training, certificates, credentials and licensures, projects, presentations and portfolio of experiential learning.
An experiential learning portfolio (ELP) is an electronic portfolio that relates specifically to a course(s) learning outcome(s) in an academic program. It demonstrates and verifies learning through documentation. If the ELP demonstrates the experience meets the objectives of a course, credit may be awarded.
The number of ELA credits students can earn depends on the program in which they enroll. These credits can meet major requirements, general education, or general elective credit. If the credit being sought is course specific, it may meet the requirements of the academic major with the approval of the appropriate Division Chair.
Interested students first meet with their Academic Advisor/Program Director to determine eligibility for ELA. The number of credits earned is based on the assessment of the portfolio. The portfolio is assessed on its content, reflection, format, organization, grammar, and demonstration of an integration of experience and learning. It should also demonstrate competence in college level writing. Applications may be obtained from the Registrar's Office.
NOTE: The University of Saint Mary does not guarantee the transferability of any credits awarded by the ELA process to another college or university.
Not all USM departments and/or programs offer the option of ELA credits. Students should check with their respective advisors for eligibility.
